Art Quiz (New feature in the Newsletter)
Why do some watercolor pigments stain paper while others don’t? Should those pigments be avoided
in your paintings?
Some pigments are called stains because once the wash dries they stay where you put them. You can glaze over them or work an area with several brushstrokes and they won’t dissolve and mix with fresh paint.
These pigments are powerful, add strength and can be used as undercolors because they glow through later washes. These include Phthalo, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmiums, Permanent Magenta, Prussian Blue, Hansa Yellow, Hooker’s Green, Indigo and Payne’s Gray among others. These are pigments that add a lot to
a painting and should absolutely be used.
